Equipment Usage, Safety & Technical

  • What safety precautions must be followed when operating hydraulic torque wrenches? Always ensure the tool is correctly sized for the application. Crucial safety steps include never exceeding the tool’s maximum rated pressure/torque, ensuring all hoses and couplings are secure and free from leaks before pressurisation, always using a properly fitted and secured reaction arm, and keeping hands and body parts clear of all pinch points during operation.
  • How do I convert the required torque value to the correct hydraulic pump pressure (PSI/BAR)? You must use the calibration chart or pressure-to-torque conversion table specific to the exact torque wrench and head you are using. This chart provides the precise pump pressure (PSI or Bar) needed to achieve the target output torque (Nm or ft-lbs) based on the tool’s effective ratio. Never use a chart from a different tool.
  • What is the recommended maintenance schedule for hydraulic pumps and hoses during a long-term rental? For long-term rentals, we recommend a daily check of the hydraulic fluid level and a visual inspection of all hoses for any signs of abrasion, cuts, or leaks. Hoses should be regularly cleaned, checked for proper coupling function, and shielded from extreme heat or physical damage.
  • How does temperature affect the accuracy of the torque reading? Extreme temperatures can affect the viscosity of the hydraulic oil, which may slightly impact the tool’s performance. While the primary calibration is done at ambient temperature, it is best practice to allow both the tool and pump to acclimate to the working temperature. Always refer to your calibration certificate’s specified operating range.
  • What are the primary causes of bolting tool failures, and how can they be avoided? Primary failures include premature wear from using incorrect lubricants on drive components, exceeding the tool’s maximum torque capacity, and damage to reaction components. Avoid this by only using the tool within its rated limits, ensuring proper lubrication (as per the manufacturer’s guide), and securely fitting all reaction accessories.
  • Can I use an extension or non-standard reaction arm with your tools? It is generally not recommended as modifying the reaction arm can alter the effective geometry and introduce unforeseen forces, potentially damaging the tool or creating an unsafe condition. If a custom solution is necessary, please contact our technical team to discuss approved, engineered solutions that maintain the tool’s integrity and safety factor.
  • What is the difference between “Torque Control” and “Tensioning” and when should each be used? Torque Control is an indirect method that applies rotational force to a nut to stretch the bolt. Tensioning is a direct method that uses a puller and bridge to stretch the bolt axially, achieving a highly accurate, measurable preload. Tensioning is typically used for critical joints, high-load applications, or whenever a direct and uniform load is required.

Service, Calibration & Compliance

  • How often should I have my bolting tools serviced and calibrated? Industry standards, such as those by the ISO and various accreditation bodies, typically recommend calibration at least once every 12 months. However, tools used in critical applications or high-cycle environments may require more frequent checks. Follow your internal quality control procedures or consult our service team.
  • Which standards or accreditations do you calibrate to? We calibrate equipment to internationally recognised standards, including those traceable to UKAS (United Kingdom Accreditation Service). Our calibration certificates provide full traceability, ensuring compliance with industry quality and safety regulations.
  • How long does a typical tool service and calibration take? The turnaround time depends on the type of tool, the extent of the service required, and our current workload. We aim for a swift service, typically completing standard calibrations within 3-5 working days. Expedited services may be available upon request.
  • Can you service and calibrate tools that were not purchased or hired from Torque Solutions Ltd? Absolutely. We offer comprehensive service, repair, and calibration for most major brands and types of bolting equipment, regardless of where they were originally sourced.
  • What documentation will I receive after service and calibration? Upon completion, you will receive a detailed Calibration Certificate for each tool, traceability information, and confirmation of compliance. For serviced tools, you’ll also receive a detailed Service Report outlining any parts replaced and work performed.
  • What documentation do I need to keep on-site to prove compliance for critical bolting jobs? For critical jobs, you must have the tool’s current, valid, and traceable Calibration Certificate, the bolting procedure (specifying the target torque and sequence), and a record of the actual work performed (e.g., a Joint Completion Sign-Off Sheet or log).
  • What is ‘tool scatter’ and how do your calibration practices minimise its effect? ‘Tool scatter’ (or repeatability) refers to the variation in output torque achieved when the same input is applied multiple times. We minimise its effect by calibrating tools across their full working range to ensure minimal linearity and repeatability errors, and by regularly maintaining internal components that contribute to friction and variability.

Hire Reliability & Support

  • What happens if the equipment malfunctions while I’m using it? All our hired equipment is rigorously checked and calibrated before dispatch. In the unlikely event of a malfunction, stop use immediately and contact us. We’ll provide technical troubleshooting or arrange for a rapid replacement to minimise your downtime.
  • How quickly can I get the equipment I need? We prioritise fast turnaround. For in-stock items, we often offer same-day or next-day delivery across the UK. Our logistical network and streamlined dispatch process are designed to meet urgent project timelines and minimise costly delays.
  • Do you offer technical support if we encounter an issue on-site? Yes. Our customers benefit from 24/7 technical phone support from our experienced bolting specialists. We can assist with troubleshooting, application advice, and procedural questions to keep your project moving safely and efficiently.
